Aialik Bay has been a favorite sea kayaking destination in the Kenai Fjords National Park for years. This is a everchanging environment that is rich in tide water glaciers, piedmont glaciers, and alpine glaciers.
We start this trip at our office with a meeting at 7:00 am. for paperwork and packing gear. The guide fits your pfd and issues dry bags for your personal gear. We load up and head to the water taxi that leaves at approx. 8:00 am. Your water taxi heads south and out in the gulf along the Kenai Fjords coast. The water taxi will sight see and look for whales, and Orcas while traveling to the drop off beach. The water taxi ride will take 2 hrs. - 3 hrs. to get to the beach drop off.

At the drop off beach we strectch, have a hot drink, and discuss the days paddle itenerary, park rules & regs, Leave No Trace ethics and start our adventure. We paddle with the high tide in mind, because we can enter Pedersen Lagoon if we hit the high tide. A great lunch will be enjoyed while taking a lunch break.
Aialik Glacier is one of the destinations that we may opt to check out, depending on the ice floating in the bay. Holgate is another tide water glacier the is another option for our adventure. The destination can change per weather conditions in the bay and winds that will blow off of the glaciers. Entry into the lagoon is made by entering the river as it reverses flow and we paddle with the reversed tidal
flow back into the lagoon. NICE! This lagoon is home to a large harbor seal population. If we get into the lagoon we will paddle making sure not to harass or disturb the harbor seal that have hauled out upon the ice shelf. Most of the time we are greeted by harbor seals as we paddle into the river. The trip will then check out the lagoon, and paddle back out.
You will enjoy the rest of the day paddling and your guide will provide interpertive information about the scenic rugged area.
Truly one of the more adventurous overnight trips in a remote and isolated area of the Kenai Fjords National Park. We encourage anyone joining any of our adventures to this area of the park to include a few extra days into their itinerary to allow for weather delays in either your departure or pickup to and from this remote area. We also suggest that you consider trip insurance in case of weather and marine warnings.
The Aialik trip departs from our office outside of Seward, with a gear check out and a briefing. We board Capt. Joe Allen's landing craft and depart for Ailalik Bay. While we enjoy our journey out in the bay and outside of the bay we often enjoy the Dall's porpoises bow riding along with our boat. Occasionally we observe Humpback whales, Orcas, Puffins, and Harbor seals along the way. One of the most interesting sights we are sometimes able to see are the harbor seals that inhabit the Piedmont glacier known as Pedersen. If tide is favorable we ride the inflow from Aialik Bay as the outflow from Pedersen Lagoon changes direction. This also happens to be one of the more popular camping areas in Aialik Bay. The National Park Service has made available a land holding that they lease from the Port Graham Native Corporation to be used by the visitors visiting Pedersen Lagoon. Bear resistant food containers are located at this area.
This area is home to a large population of Black Bears and our guides will carry bear spray for personal protection.
Our MSR tents have proven to handle the elements that we encounter while adventuring in this wilderness.
Join us as we explore newly exposed formations as the ice retreats, this yearly process exposes never before seen land forms and creates amazing new paddle locations.
